SADC DFRC and EDF Train Malawi Stakeholders on Infrastructure Finance and PPPs

The Southern African Development Community Development Finance Resource Centre (SADC-DFRC), in partnership with the Export Development Fund (EDF), hosted a specialized training on infrastructure finance and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) structuring and implementation at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

The program brought together participants from leading commercial banks, development finance institutions, and government agencies central to infrastructure development. The training aimed to equip stakeholders with technical skills to design PPP frameworks that reduce financial risk and attract private investment for critical projects.

The Export Development Fund (EDF) has launched the first ever Malawi Trade Report 2025, a landmark publication that lays bare the country’s trade realities and charts a path toward resilience and competitiveness in a volatile global economy.

The report, themed “Resilience and Realignment: Tracking Malawi’s Trade in a Volatile Global Economy,” reveals sobering statistics: Malawi’s exports contracted by 7.1% to US$958.5 million in 2024, while imports surged to US$3.31 billion, leaving a trade deficit of US$2.36 billion. Inflation stood at 32.2%, and GDP growth slowed to 1.8%, underscoring the urgency for structural transformation.

Standard Bank Malawi Sponsors Malawi Pavilion at IATF 2025

Standard Bank Malawi has sponsored the Malawi Pavilion at the upcoming Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 with a financial contribution of US$10,000, channelled through the Export Development Fund (EDF). The funds will support the construction of the pavilion, which will serve as the country’s official exhibition space at the event.
EDF is supporting the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC), which is coordinating Malawi’s participation at the trade fair scheduled to take place from 4-10 September in Algiers, Algeria. The pavilion will showcase Malawian products and services, providing a space for local businesses to engage with buyers and investors from across Africa.
